This is the safest school around .. oh really??
I was sitting in a resolution meeting in a small art classroom in a large high school. The issues being discussed were lack of progress on IEP goals as well as the student’s safety. The student was being bullied. The school staff who were present at the meeting were saying how the bullying was unfounded and how this was one of the the safest schools around. Literally, in the same breath, a student’s head was slammed against the glass panel of the closed door that led out of the art room. A large brawl broke out in the hallway. The staff continued on as if nothing was happening (maybe they were thinking I didn’t notice??). Security did come and break up the fight, but wow, talk about bad timing. We were able to get the student placed in a smaller more structured (and friendlier) environment and he is doing great today!
